World Environment Day Mask Challenge

Nine out of ten people breathe polluted air. From 24 May, through to #WorldEnvironmentDay on June 5, we called on everyone to join the Mask Challenge. Face masks were a great symbol to show leaders we want to breathe clean air. Alongside celebrities, influencers and creators, the World Environment Day campaign invited everyone to:

People took many actions to #BeatAirPollution

Here are some examples:

  • Used public transport or car sharing, cycle or walk
  • Switched to a hybrid or electric vehicle and request electric taxis
  • Turned off the car engine when stationary
  • Reduced their consumption of meat and dairy to help cut methane emissions
  • Composted organic food items and recycled non-organic trash
  • Switched to high-efficiency home heating systems and equipment
  • Saved energy: turn off lights and electronics when not in use 
  • Chose non-toxic paints and furnishings
     
  1. They made a pledge and challenged others to take action
    May 24th – June 4th

    • Took a photo or video of themselves wearing a mask and posted on social media. 
    • Got creative and made their own!
    • In their post shared the action they'll take to reduce air pollution
    • Tagged 3 people/organizations/ companies to challenge them to do the same.
    • Used #WorldEnvironmentDay and #BeatAirPollution in their social media posts and tagged @UNEnvironment.
       
  2. On World Environment Day, they fulfilled their pledge!

  • Took another photo or video of themselves fulfilling their commitment and posted it on social media.
  • Used #WorldEnvironmentDay and #BeatAirPollution in their social media posts and tagged @UNEnvironment.
