Civil Society Groups

Drive accountability and ambition

By strengthening transparency, accountability and public participation, civil society can help accelerate climate action and support stronger implementation of climate commitments. Civil society also plays a critical role through public engagement and stronger climate governance.

Mobilize communities for climate action

Empowering communities to participate in decision-making, planning and implementation can help make climate action more effective, durable and equitable. Community-led action can strengthen local ownership, build trust and help deliver solutions that improve lives and resilience.

Strengthen local resilience

Supporting locally led adaptation can help communities better prepare for climate impacts while protecting livelihoods, infrastructure, food and water security. Communities often best understand their own risks and priorities, making local resilience efforts more effective, sustainable and equitable over the long term.

Champion Indigenous knowledge and environmental leadership

Supporting Indigenous knowledge, stewardship and leadership can help protect critical carbon sinks, strengthen climate resilience and sustain healthy ecosystems. Indigenous Peoples safeguard around 80 per cent of the world’s remaining biodiversity despite representing less than 5 per cent of the global population.

Shape change through storytelling and advocacy

Strengthening climate communication and public engagement can help build trust in science, counter misinformation and inspire action at every level of society. Storytelling and advocacy also play an important role in accelerating behavioural change and building momentum for stronger climate policies.

Advance fair and inclusive climate solutions

Supporting a just transition and inclusive climate action can help improve livelihoods, reduce inequalities and strengthen support for vulnerable communities. Inclusive solutions can also help ensure that the benefits of climate action are shared more broadly across society.

Build momentum for faster action

Mobilizing public support and collective action can help unlock faster climate policies, investments and systemic changes across energy, transport, food systems and nature. Public engagement can also help accelerate the transition toward safer, healthier and more resilient societies.
